"Thirty Days a Black Man"

I just finished reading "30 Days a Black Man" about newspaperman Ray Sprigle posing as a black man in the Jim Crow south in 1948. His series of articles following the experience prompted the first national discussion about the evils of segregation.

Unfortunately the discussion only lasted about 6 months. It did, however, pave the way for the idea of segregation being a national issue. It occurred 7 years before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery bus (which marked the beginning of the modern civil rights movement). This is an excellent book that recalls this important but forgotten history-making event. Bravo Bill Steigerwald for further awakening our collective memory.
